Mi-Young
Lee

Pianist

Biography

C oming from South Korea, where she was born, Mi-Young Lee began her first piano lessons at an early age. A first prize was awarded to her unanimously by the jury at Kyung-Hee University in Seoul.

In 2000, noticed by several international concert artists, she was invited to join the École Normale de Musique de Paris. There, she quickly won several first prizes in interpretation.

It was then that Theodor Breu, the only disciple of the great Katchen, decided to devote himself to the artistic development of the young pianist. The German master recognised in his student the rare union of a passionate temperament and complete clarity of interpretation.

A singular artist, Mi-Young Lee is now regarded as a truly artisan-pianist, striving for authenticity in interpretation in the service of the purity of music and the truth of the composer. Deep within herself, she has the desire to shape the sound of each note as a sculptor would shape clay. Wherever she performs, Mi-Young Lee impresses audiences and critics alike with the originality and depth of her interpretation.

“I like to define myself as an artisan-pianist. At the deepest level within me, I have the desire to work on sound as a sculptor would work with clay. I return to the craft one hundred times over, so that from my piano there may emerge a sound that is pure and transcendent…”

My Repertoire

I like to adapt my programme to the time, the place and the audience before me. Every place suggests to me one or several works depending on the moment of the day that has been chosen. To play at sunset in a wooded park would naturally make me want to interpret a nocturne by Chopin. Music thus becomes more accessible to the public and comes closer to what the composer may have imagined.
